Udon Thani is heading into its busiest season in years. The cool months already bring visitors for the Red Lotus Sea, and this year the city also hosts an international garden expo. If you are thinking about living or buying here, it is a good time to visit and see the city at its liveliest.

The Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo 2026

The expo runs from 1 November 2026 to 14 March 2027. It is an AIPH-approved Category B international horticultural expo, held at the Nong Dae Wetland in Kut Sa sub-district, Mueang Udon Thani district. The park covers about 165 hectares, and the theme is "Diversity of Life: Connecting People, Water and Plants for Sustainable Living". The AIPH listing expects around 3.6 million visitors and participants from about 20 countries.

For residents, the practical points are simple:

  • Expect more visitors, events and traffic around Kut Sa and the routes into the city, especially at weekends.
  • Plan property viewings in that part of town with a little extra travel time.
  • Check the official expo channels for opening hours and tickets before you go, as details are announced by the organisers.

The Red Lotus Sea, December to February

Every cool season the lake at Nong Han Kumphawapi, in Kumphawapi district about 45 km from the city, turns pink with flowering water lilies. The blooms usually run from December through February. Local boat operators advise going early in the morning, roughly 6 to 11 a.m., because the flowers close as the sun gets stronger. Boats leave from the Ban Diam pier.

The same road trip pairs well with Ban Chiang, in Nong Han district, about 55 km from the city. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992 and is known for its Bronze Age finds and red-painted pottery. The Ban Chiang National Museum explains the site.

Everyday Udon: Nong Prajak and the city centre

Most evenings, life in the city centres on Nong Prajak Park, the lakeside park with a walking and cycling loop. The Thesa Road side faces the sunset and has restaurants and street food. It is free, family-friendly and busiest after the heat of the day.

Next to Central Plaza and the train station, UD Town is the city's open-air lifestyle mall, with shops, cafés, a food court and a night market. CentralPlaza Udon Thani adds a cinema, bowling and a supermarket. Udon Thani International Airport is close to the city centre, with regular domestic flights from Bangkok.

Choosing a neighbourhood

  • Near the centre (around Nong Prajak, UD Town and Central Plaza): walkable shops, restaurants and services. Good for renters and for people who want to live without a car.
  • Inside or near the ring road: more space and newer housing estates, a short drive from the malls and hospitals.
  • Out towards Kut Sa: closer to the expo site and the Nong Dae wetland, with a more rural feel.
  • Nong Han and Kumphawapi: lake country near the Red Lotus Sea and Ban Chiang. Larger plots and a slower pace, about an hour from the city.

A note for foreign buyers

Foreigners generally cannot own land in Thailand. The usual routes are a condominium unit within a building's foreign quota, or a registered lease of up to 30 years. Read our Bang Saray guide for the basics, and speak to a registered lawyer before you sign anything. Our legal help page explains how we refer clients.
